![]() virginica is the conspicuously shining black abdomen. The primary difference in the appearances of a bumblebee and X. virginica is found throughout much of North America east of the Rocky Mountains and at least as far north as Nebraska, southern Ontario, and Maine. virginica belongs to the genus Xylocopa, which consists of over 400 species worldwide, in the subgenus Xylocopoides, which contains only 5 New World species, including Xylocopa californica, which also occurs in the U.S. Bees with sharp galae can use these to further aid in penetrating the corolla tubes. Eastern carpenter bees also have galae on their maxillae that are shaped like large, flat blades. Their maxillae are sharp and wedge-shaped, allowing them to split the side of corolla tubes externally to access the nectar. virginica have distinctive maxillae that are adapted to performing perforations on corolla tubes to reach nectaries. Primary females are larger than secondary or tertiary females, and also have more mandibular and wing wear. Females of different social standing can also be told apart based on morphology. Additionally, the males have larger thoracic volumes for given masses. The males also have a white spot on their face. virginica males and females have generally the same mass, but can be differentiated visually by the male's longer body and the female's wider head. If the nest isn’t removed, it will continue to grow in size and will produce more and more worker wasps as the summer progresses. Even though baldfaced hornets are pretty docile, all wasps become aggressive when they feel their nest is being threatened. If the wasps are indeed nesting in your shed, you will want to have that nest removed. ![]() You should have a professional exterminator inspect the area and try to locate the nest. Because baldfaced hornets usually keep to themselves and because their nests are often inaccessible, we don’t usually recommend any control for them unless their nests are in a place where they might interact with people or pets. Have That Nest Removed Before It Gets Too BigĪs with all yellowjacket wasps, it’s much easier to control them and eliminate the nest early in the season when it is still relatively small (assuming you can reach it). That could mean that they are building a nest in or on your shed instead of up in a tree. They don’t have the same foraging habits as other yellowjackets and so are less likely to interact with people and their food (see Baldfaced Hornets Are Rarely a Problem).īaldfaced hornets are not usually seen in large numbers away from the nest, so it’s surprising that you are seeing “lots” of them. The worker wasps capture insects and spiders to feed to the developing larvae in the nest. Baldfaced Hornets Keep to Themselvesīaldfaced hornets make those large, football-sized, papery nests that you often see way up high in trees (see What Makes Those Big, Paper Nests in Trees?). It’s actually a type of yellowjacket, but it’s the only one that is not yellow and black. But our only black and white social wasp is the baldfaced hornet. If you hadn’t mentioned that they were black and white wasps, there could be several possibilities. What are these and where would they be nesting? P. We’ve been seeing a lot of different-looking, black and white wasps flying around near our back shed. ![]() Baldfaced Hornets at the entrance to their nest ![]()
